Since the Lavabit shutdown we’ve learnt that FBI/NSA is putting gag orders on American companies (and their founders/employees) so that they cannot even talk publicly - eller privat med sina advokater - about the secret things the American government is forcing them to do.
LADAR Levison föredrog att omedelbart stänga ner Lavabit istället för att installera bakdörrar åt FBI - och blev även hotad med att bli gripen för det.
Kommer VPN leverantörer göra detsamma när FBI knackar på deras dörr? We don’t know for sure.
Under 2012 we moved the company to Hong Kong to avoid secret court orders to install backdoors & monitoring.
We found it interesting that Snowden chose to go public in Hong Kong… Snowden’s reasons were “Hong Kong has a strong tradition of free speech. Folk tror att Kina, med sin Great Firewall ... men folket i Hong Kong har en lång tradition av att protestera på gatorna, lämna sina synpunkter ... och jag tror Hong Kongs regering faktiskt är oberoende i förhållande till många andra ledande västerländska regeringar.”
Even Julian Assange said “Our own political and legal analysis of Snowden’s situation was that Hong Kong would play it by the book…” för att upprätthålla “... Sitt rykte som ett land som har en stark rättsstat när den är under en stor granskning, en önskan om att inte förstöra sina goda relationer till Kina och att inte se ut som att USA bestämmer över dem”.
